“… I welcome Susanna Mälkki’s stunning new recording with unabated enthusiasm. In every respect it is quite beautiful, but for fanciers of Bluebeard’s Castle there are special qualities not found in other recordings … Of special note is how human and sympathetic mezzo Szilvia Vörös’s Judith is. She has a lovely tone, but more importantly is a superb vocal actress … Such a winning performance can serve a double purpose. It will be delightful for newcomers and at the same time expand the expectation of listeners who know the score so well that it seems to have no secrets left to reveal. Mälkki and her two singers prove how untrue that assumption actually is.”
“… The performance is compelling, involving and nuances in a natural way… No matter how may recordings of Bluebeard’s Castle you have, there is always room for one as good as this new rendering of what I think of Bartok’s greatest work.”
“… the whole Helsinki Philharmoinc plays with a sumptuousness that doesn’t compromise musical suspense… the Hungarian mezzo Szilvia Vörös is almost ideal, delivering plenty of soft singing to contribute to the overall tonal picture. Still a young singer (unlike some famous Judiths), she has a beautifully warm middle register and distinctive tone… the young Finnish bass Mika Kares, also putting the emphasis on mellow, soft-grained vocalism and sounding suitably haunted by his past. If he avoids the dynamic extremes familiar in this role, that too is all in keeping with a refreshing interpretation.”
